Bursitis describes the inflammation and irritation of the bursa which is a small sac filled with fluid that cushions impact whilst moving as well as lubricating the join, allowing smooth movement of the joint.
The Bursa’s in the ankle can be found on the in-side of the ankle known as the subcutaneous bursa of medial malleolus, one on the heel bone known as the retrocalcaneal bursa and final there’s a bursa right at the heel call the sebaceous calcaneal bursa. Bursitis is caused by the bursa coming under stress from movement, overtraining or direct impact but on occasions can also be caused by poorly fitted footwear.
The bursa on the elbow is on its outside surface called the olecranon bursa.
The bursas in the hip can be found above the femur (thigh bone) known as the greater trochanteric bursa and the Iliopsoas bursa. Bursitis is caused by the bursa coming under stress from movement, overtraining or direct impact but on occasions can also be caused by poorly fitted footwear.
The bursas in the knee can be found above the kneecap (suprapatellar Bursa), on the kneecap (prepatellar bursa), under the kneecap (infrapatellar Bursa) and one slightly below the knee on the inner part of the knee known as the Pes anserine bursa the Bursitis is caused by the bursa coming under stress from movement, overtraining or direct impact but on occasions can also be caused by poorly fitted footwear.
