Iliotibial Band Pain Syndrome Pain

The Iliotibial band is the tendon that connects from the side of your hip and all the way down to the tibia (lower leg bone), this is an important soft tissue structure as it helps to stabilise the whole leg and keeps the kneecap in place (prevents the patella from translating medially). It also serves to help us in moving our hips. Due to the Iliotibial band (ITB) being very hard to stretch it is prone to becoming tight and a rub against the femur (thigh bone) and as a result causes pain to the outer side of the knee or hip.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Swelling below the knee
  • Pain worse during exercises
  • Popping/clicking sounds in the knee
  • Clicking sound while moving the hip with the knee bent
